We sometimes use zinc foil chopped up into small pieces instead of granulated zinc as the latter sometimes blocks the Quickfit. Using some zinc powder in place of some of the granulated zinc will speed up the process.

If it is left too long it will run out of hydrogen and not push over into the sodium ethanoate solution. The chromium(II) aquo complex can be poured directly into the sodium ethanoate solution without ill effect.
